Point Cloud
Point clouds are sets of 3D data points captured by laser scanners, such as LiDAR, structured light scanning, or photogrammetry. During scanning, the laser emits a beam that hits an object and reflects back, allowing the scanner to calculate distances and produce accurate spatial points.
To capture all site details, the scanner must be positioned from various viewpoints, a process handled by trained technicians. The resulting millions of data points form a point cloud, providing a precise map of the site, including features like doors, windows, walls, MEP equipment, ductwork, and steel structures.
High-end, survey-grade laser scanners are essential for construction projects to ensure accurate point cloud data. This data has become a standard in the architecture, engineering, and construction industry, aiding in design planning, construction sequencing, renovation, asset management, and more. Point clouds enhance project planning, reduce costs, and minimize change orders.
